How do you measure success as a husband? Is it based on your wife’s happiness or God’s standard?

I’m seriously pondering this question as I read this book (Husbands and Fathers – Derrick Prince) about my main priority as a husband. I find myself making choices and decisions in service of my own priorities and call instead of my wife’s needs.

Derrick says “To succeed in any other capacity and to fail as a husband or father is, in God’s sight, to fail. No other success makes up for that failure.”

Do I measure success on how I am perceived as a husband? I make public gestures professing my love to my wife, serenading her with gifts and lovely words but my heart is not fully submitted to her in accordance with Ephesians 5:21.

It’s hard being a husband, even harder being a Godly husband.
